What kid of advice and help did your parents give you in your college search and selection?

I was kind of curious what others parents did to help their kids select their colleges. I wanted to know what they said to you regarding your college choice and future. How did they talk to you about it what they said. I know its personal stuff so if you dont want to say anything its ok with me. I just want to know because my parents and I are completely new to this college stuff, we came to US 10 yrs ago and kind of need help ourselves

Its not like my parents did not help me I just want to know a more broader opinion.

Thanks! What kid of advice and help did your parents give you in your college search and selection?
My parents, didn't help me what so ever. I did it all by myself. I wished that my parents gave me their input, but I think they just didn't care, because they had to take care of a 5 year old. What kid of advice and help did your parents give you in your college search and selection?
My parents found someone who came to our house to discuss college options. I have no idea how they found this guy or if they paid him. Ask one of your teachers or a school counselor - see if they know of any programs where someone can actually come to your house and sit and talk to you and your folks. Your school counselors might even be able to do this for you.

The guy who came to our house - he spent an entire evening with us going over my GPA, financial assistance, different schools, everything. It really helped a lot.
I found my own way. i was very lucky in that sense. I knew very early what I wanted to do when I am a grown up. My plan was pretty much all set up from age 15. It was different for my little brother. He's 20 years old and still doesn't really know what to do with his life. He's starting university tomorrow and the way my mom went about it was basically to tell him to ask me for advice since I had already gone through it and she hasn't (she studied in another country and it was 30 years ago so things have changed a lot). I think asking older brothers and sisters is great when you have them because they have the experience and it's still recent for them so they remember exactly what the difficulties are. If you don't have older children who can do that, you can always ask older kids from the neighbourhood or cousins or children of friends who went to college. Many colleges also have open days for prospective students, so he could go to those as well. College websites are also very good and detailed these days.
