Can someone give me some advice to help this poor cat?

In the summer it really gets hot in Houston.

My dad has a cat that looks like this one

The poor thing seems to be asphyxiating, always sticking his tounge out like a thirsty dog.

what should I do?

How can you trim the hair? Can someone give me some advice to help this poor cat?
Cats do not actually '; pant '; unless they are in dis-stress. You need to keep fresh water out for him/her at all times. You can have a groomer do a body clip if you wish. We do many long hair cats during the summer months at work. I to am in Texas and fully understand. But please take note of what I wrote, cats do NOT pant. That is not a cooling process they do like dogs. This kitty may need to see a vet for a underlining problem. Can someone give me some advice to help this poor cat?
take it to a petco or something similar and have them trim its coat. Just make sure that it has a cool place to rest and has plenty of water. My cats do the same during the summer time but I always make sure they have a cool place to rest...like my basement or I put the air conditioner on.
My cat looks exactly like that and I live in Australia. The thing is, that fur acts as an insulator for both cold and hot. That's why we can have a husky without trimming his fur!

If, however, you really are concerned about you're cat, take him to a vet and have him checked. The vet may suggest having him clipped if he's ruled out any possible illnesses.

I hope this helps ;)
Hm.. ';CAT'; may be right- panting may be okay, but talk to a vet just in case.. :}
Cats pant to cool down. You will have to consult a vet to get a judgement on how much hair can be trimmed since a cat's fur is also used to cool it down. Cutting the fur down to the skin will actually do more harm than good.

Keep cold water available through out the day. And if possible bring her into an air conditioned area, or somewhere with a fan.
Give The Cat Some Cool Water To Drink. Dont Cut There Hair. And Call Your Vet
Sticking out the tongue is how cats and dogs sweat.

You don't need to trim the hair, just keep it indoors.
Beautiful cat. Don't touch her hair, It actually protects her from the heat. If the cat stays indoors just make sure there is moveing air .If you don't have air-conditioning, make sure there are plenty of fans going.Keep cool water ready for her at all times. That is all I can think of.
Cute cat! I really couldnt tell ya, ive never heard of a cat doin that.
No, some cats do that. Clipping its hair won't help. Panting does not mean it is thristy..it keeps it cool.
if u dont wanna shave it brush it regularly and keep it were its cool like in air conditioning or shave the body except head tail and paws..
He's beautiful. Don't trim his hair, for some reason it helps them stay cooler. Just make sure he has plenty of water and if there's no air conditioning, then have a fan that he can lie near. Also, my cats seem to like bare floors like the kitchen and bathroom floors. I hope he makes out alright.
you could try to make a cool place for the cat to get away. freezing a milk jug of water and placing it in a box or kitty house with some form of bedding may help with the heat. otherwise keep it inside with the ac on. i wouldn't recommed trimming the hair.
Take him to a groomers, they will give him a hair cut called a lion cut. He will be a lot cooler. My cat had to have it done also and she is a lot more active during the summer now. Before the cut the poor thing would just lie around. Try Petsmart.
Brush her as often as possible (preferably daily) to eliminate extra hair. If she stays outside, I have seen cats whose body is shaved for the summer, but I am not sure if that is good or not.

Make sure she has plenty of fresh water and a cool, shady place to lay. My cats like cool hard surfaces.
Your Dad's cat is panting because he is hot. If he gets too hot he can have seziures and die. If he is outside all the time he should have some kind of shelter or a space where he can go to be safe while he cools off. You could get him shaved too but for that you should take him to a groomer. A groomer can give him a 'lion cut' which means that all the fur on his body excluding his head and the tip of his tail, is shaved very short. This is usually done on severely matted cats but my parents did it to their cat when they moved to Las Vegas, which is very hot, even though the cat was an' indoor' cat.
Some cats stick their tongues out even when they're comfortable. Talk to the cats vet before you try to trim the hair. The hair will also insulate from heat (like a camel). Make sure the cat has protection from the sun and plenty of water.
