My child is overweight and I would like to address the issue as a health issue not a weight issue. I don't want to hurt her self esteem. Any suggestions? Can anyone give some advice to me, help my child to want to eat healthy?
Go to the website www.hufa.org. Sometimes weight gain can be due to low blood sugar - one of the pre-diabetic conditions. It is a health issue, and it is good you are addressing it that way. I would suggest borrowing the book ';Enter the Zone'; from the library. Barry Sears, Ph.D. is the author. He has lists of foods in the appendix that are categorized by food type. He lists which are better to eat to control blood sugar (the key to controlling weight), and which are worse. If you can make a game out of eating the new foods (with your child) that are on the list, to see which you like and don't - and reward each good choice with a food reward (for me it might be potatoes), you may stimulate an interest in meal planning. Who knows? Your child may become a world class chef. Can anyone give some advice to me, help my child to want to eat healthy?
There was a book that came out years ago called ';Taming of the Candy Monster'; It is filled with fun recipies, great facts, and healthy advice for children's health relating to eating habits. It preaches education, preparation, moderation, and healthy fun. Maybe an idea for health a day, where you and your child try to reach one little goal a day (perhaps with inspiration from this book or one similar) and you and your child may build up an education, even if he or she may be stubborn to exercise it immediately.
All the best to you. I was a chubby child too. Finding love in an activity which suited me was what worked for me. I went through all the extracurricular activities you can think of before one stuck enough to be loved.
The best way to make changes in your child's eating habits is to do it together - set a good example. Talk to your entire family about eating 3 healthy meals per day. Avoid buying and making baked goods or other foods with high fat contents. Buy low fat butter, milk, and other dairy products. Serve ice water at meals rather than high calorie or high sugar drinks. Exercise together with your daughter. Try an activity that you all enjoy - bicycling, swimming, rollerblading, etc. Make it fun! Praise her often for eating healthy and exercising daily. Don't weigh or measure her. You will notice changes in the way her clothing fits. Good luck.
